On the Ards Peninsula, on the shores of Strangford Lough, stands one of Northern Ireland’s most impressive estates: Mount Stewart.

This stately home, surrounded by spectacular gardens, is much more than a pretty place for a stroll; it’s a living piece of British history and a must-visit destination if you’re in Belfast.

📚A Bit of History

Mount Stewart, near Belfast, was from the 18th century the home of the powerful Marquesses of Londonderry, a family with significant political influence in the United Kingdom and Ireland. One of its most famous owners was Charles Vane, the 3rd Marquess, a military officer and politician during the Victorian era.

The current neoclassical house was remodelled in the 19th century and became a centre of social and political life.

Its rooms still contain portraits, tapestries, luxurious furniture, and family memorabilia — a true journey back in time for anyone who enjoys aristocratic history.

🪻The Gardens: A Unique Spectacle

Although the mansion is impressive, Mount Stewart is truly famous for its gardens.

In the early 20th century, Lady Edith Londonderry transformed them, inspired by her travels around the Mediterranean.

Today, they are considered among the most spectacular in Europe, thanks to their design and the area’s mild microclimate, which allows unusual plant species to thrive in Northern Ireland.

Some of the highlights:

  • 🌺 The Spanish Garden: full of colour, tiles, and geometry.

  • 🌿 The Italian Garden: formal, symmetrical, and elegant.

  • 🌸 Romantic pathways, classical sculptures, fountains, and exotic corners.

  • 🌊 The surroundings of Strangford Lough, completing the scenery with stunning views.

Walking through them feels like travelling to different countries in just a few steps.
